5 minute alert in West Germany will get your heart pumping. Sometimes during taxi and takeoff you were still trying to finish strapping in.

  • As a kid I would go out with my Dad on Saturdays when they launched the F-4's out of Wichita. Being on the flight line was pretty cool for a kid. Miss the smell of the place.

  • @smhutson The flight line had a distince smell indeed. The inside of the some of the planes did as well. My dad used to take me when I was a toddler.

  • Childhood memories... Pop was an F-4 WSO in Neuburg / Donau in the JG 74 Mölders, and yeah, there`s nothing like the smell of JP-5 & Kerosene, along with the slight touch of heated asphalt, then later on in the Squad building with the old g-suits, helmets and the obligational 20mm Vulcan gatgun sittin`on its pedestal, you noticed the other familiar scents in the O-Club... Greetings to all the other sons`n`daughters of fighter jocks.

  • Before my time, the F-4s were gone from Bitburg and Hahn by time I got there...

  • Never saw a cart start of an F-4 in 5 years of working on them. The sounds take me back. This is a great video!

  • The 2 hangars in the video are still up... Most of the others are down already. Good thing I was able to take some pictures before they got taken care of.

  • I crewed F-4E's for 6 yrs. in the AF, two of which were at Bitburg. 22nd TFS of the 36th TFW, so our alert duty was "Victor" (Nuke) alert, along with the 53rd TFS...Zulu (5 min.) duty was pulled by the 525th "Bulldogs" ('Able' section). 22nd and 53rd was 'Baker' and 'Charlie' sections respectively. Really miss those days, there was absolutely NOTHING like it!
