The legendary pianist Joseph Villa performs Liszts Hungarian Rhapsody in E-flat major no. 9, S. 244 (Carnival in Pest), live from a 1973 PBS telecast in Maryland. He was 25 years old at the time of this recording. Courtesy of Steven Gray.
While I suppose it's possible that PBS re-broadcast this program in Maryland, it was in fact recorded for CBS's fladgship Sunday Morning arts broadcast< "Camera 3" directed by Merrill Brockway. Faubion Bowers, the critic and Scriabin biographer, frequently hosted, as he did on this occasion, and always selected the pianists. I have to take some credit, as I introduced Faubion to Garrick Ohlsson and to Joe Villa, who he heard for the first time at a private soiree at Garrick's home in NYC.
@manhattanvor No, he never looked like that, as you probably know. I suppose he was trying to dress a la Liszt for the broadcast. But it seems a little silly now, as he always dressed conservatively in concert. In any case, it's wonderful to have access to these videos. I see that Faubion Bowers was hosting the program! Bowers, a real creep, would likely have conducted an interesting interview with Joe. If that still exists, perhaps someone can post it.

At last everyone can finally see what the fuss was, and is, all about. And to think Joseph got better with every passing year. What a great posting!!
