Basset hound suffers separation anxiety! Dog howling

I suspected Dodger, our basset hound, was getting on the furniture when we would let him stay in the house while we went out. So I set up a camera to see if he really did and exactly what went on. Come to find out, he suffers from separation anxiety. The tape only holds one hour of footage and during that entire hour he paced all over the house, whined, barked, and howled.

Um... dogs cost money for upkeep, and getting a second dog does not always solve the problem. I've been in the situation where there are two dogs and one has separation anxiety. Neither one was a troublemaker, but when they were left alone together, and we returned, they had torn through the house!

Anyway... On a side note, I've never understood why insulting someone by name-calling is supposedly supposed to support your point. Very childish.

What would help him more than anything is more mental and physical exercise. This breed has stamina and needs an outlet for it. Tracking, running beside a bike at a slow pace, giving him a Kong stuffed with yummies or a Buster Cube and other mental toys while you are away would all help. Teach him some tricks. This is truely a case of "a tired dog is a good dog"! Hope this helps!

He's got a beautiful voice. Do you bring him with you when you can? My Basset does the same thing. Because I live in an appartment building with my fiance, one of us normally has him with them when the other isn't at home.

Who cares if he's on the furniture? That was one of my favorite things about my Basset! I'd sit in a chair and he'd waddle on over and jump in my lap! 60lb lap dogs are the best! XDDDDD .....But seriously, keep his nails clipped and then who cares if he gets on the furniture. Heck, I sure as hell don't want to have to sit on the ground to pet him! lol
