I was diagnosed with ADD. I am 18 and unlike a lot of people (namely children) it took be a year and MANY tests to be diagnosed. Its hard to diagnose children, as ALL children are impulsive, can have bad behavior, and get distracted easily. I got through high school (barely) and I have a very intense form of ADD. Do I wish that I was diagnosed earlier (as I cannot get into my first choice colleges)? Yes. But I'd rather be safe than sorry and wait a while to be truthfully diagnosed.

From someone that HAD to take Ritalin for 3 years as a child it DOES give you side effects!!

@AnotherBrownKid Look into getting a brain scan. Dr Amen is the leader in this area and he states it tells more about what exactly is going on with your brain. I think if you need medication try the straterra for 3-4 months and see if it helps, but go to a psychiatrist not a regular MD doctor, who won't give you more than 15 minutes of your time or ask you about your family history of any addictions or mental illness. The brain is an organ just like the liver, or heart and can have defects.

@pwg1126 alright thanks for your help. so what i should do plain and simple is do stuff for general health and not take the medications. right?

@AnotherBrownKid Be sure you are getting a consistent 6-8 hours of sleep. Eat less fried food and try to eat healthy. Exercise and take sublingual B12. Notice these energy drinks have massive amounts of B12. Research natural treatment for ADD and ADHD. Also look at book stores for new books on this epidemic problem. Don't worry too much. Addiction is like a line that once you cross it, you rarely come back. Most rehabs are only having 20% success rate. Don't damage your brain.

@AnotherBrownKid Go to the FDA webpage and get a copy of the warning guide. FDA has moved the warning up to a black box warning. It is causing an increase in sudden death. If you google the Ritalin study by Dr Yong Kim of the National Institute of Drug Abuse he found that Ritalin is more addictive to the brain than cocaine. Ritalin is very similiar to cocaine in it's chemical structure. God bless and protect you.

@pwg1126 i dont want many side effects. i think i should just stay srug free and struggle. is it not worth it? you said your son died of it. that totally scares me. i dont know what to do. ive done soo much research and i cant come up with a conclusion. i think ill just drink coffee everyday which might help me pay attention a bit more.

@AnotherBrownKid Do your research on the internet and YouTube. I have heard it works for about 70% of the people, but there are side effects to watch for too. All drugs seem to have that. Ask your doctor to try non-stimulant or at least time released, but you will gradually eliminate your brains ability to make the dopamines you need.
Smoke pot. It make you happy.

ADHD in children is a by-product of food additives and coloring, chemical preservatives, and all those things that I can't pronounce - excess sugar also contributes. Ritalin is not the answer, it's a diet change. Whole clean foods are a great start. ADHD is diagnosed by a 20 question check list.... I would hate to be diagnosed for any ailment based on someone else's opinion and observation.
