Govardhan Puja 2009 at Govardhan Dham, Huglett Wood cow protection farm, Sussex. This is the 3rd year in a row HH Mahavishnu Swami attended the event with devotees mainly from Brighton & Hove, Peacehaven and the nearby towns including some from the London area.
The farm includes scores of cows including Jersey cows, guinea fowls, pheasants, rams, sheeps, chickens, ducks, geese and many more. All this is due to the dedication of Wenda and Matthew's hard work.
Krsna as a small boy lifted Govardhan Hill with one finger for seven days of unabated heavy rainfall and thunderstorm to protect His devotee from King Indra's anger.
Many many years ago, Krishna saw his devotees preparing sacrifices to pacify Indra, King of Heaven, who is responsile for supplying water. As stated in the Caitanya caritamrta, a devotee of Krsna ha strong and firm faith in the understanding that if he simply engaged in Krsna conciousness and Krsna' transcendental loving service, then he is frred from all obligations. A pure devotee of Krsna does not have to perform any of the ritualistic functions enjoined in the Vedas nor is he required to worship any demigods. Being a devotee of Sri Krsna, one is understand to have performed all kinds of worship to the demigods. One who perform ritualistic ceremonies to the demigods, he does not develop devotional service to Krsna. But one who is engaged fully in the service of Krsna has already finished all Vedic injunctions.
To stop such activities during his presence in Vrindavana and as a matter of etiqutte, He began to inquire with great honour and submission from elder personalities like His father, Maharaja Nanda.
Upon hearing His father's reasoning, Krsna spoke in such a way that made Indra very angry - to forgo the sacrifice. His reasons for discouraging it is two twofold. First, there is no need to worship the demigods for any material advancement as all results delivered are simply temporary, and only those who are less intelligent are interested in temporary results. Secondly, whatever temporary results one derives from worshipping the demigod is actually granted by the permission of Krsna. It is cleary stated in the Bhagavad-gita, mayaiva vihitam hi tan. Without Krsna's persmission one cannot bestow any benefit upon others. As stated in the Srimad Bhagavatam that in this instance Krsna wants to make Indra angry. Krsna's advent was especially meant for the annihilation of the demons and protection of the devotees. King Indra was certainly a devotee, not a demon, but because he was puffed up, Krsna wanted to teach him a lesson.
