I went to New Zealand in 1993 when I was 6.

By popular, he probably means most commonly seen. Like he said, the kiwi only comes out at night, so one hardly sees one.

I can safely say I've seen all of those things, New Zealand is great.
Mind you, I dislike the emphasis on sheep, the kiwi is easily the most "popular" of new zealand's animals.
