Later on, Lewis Carroll gave in and came up with a solution to the Raven/Writing Desk riddle: "Because it can produce a few notes, though they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front." He originally spelled "never" as "Nevar," but a proofreader fixed it for him, thus adding to the riddle.
