I think it is the thing that every cat do. It is something that affects on their hunt/play instinct :3 If the cat is on playing mode, it charges when you are not looking at it and tries to scare you. But if the cat is sleepy or not in playing mood it will just get confused and check carefully what is their owner doing ^^
