During the weekend of Friday, August 20, 2010, Trains Unlimited Tours, in conjunction with Amtrak, Union Pacific and WPRM, chartered a special 14-car passenger train called the "Feather River Express" from Emeryville, California to Portola, California for the annual Portola Railroad Days celebration in Portola (see link below). People and railroad fans from around the country were invited aboard the train of privately owned luxury cars to re-live and experience a ride along one of the most famous stretches of line once traveled by the Western Pacific California Zephyr between 1949 and 1970. This specific 120-mile portion of track between Oroville and Portola is known as the majestic and breathtaking Feather River Canyon.
Once the train arrived at Portola, passengers were free to disembark and enjoy two days of parades, music, food, entertainment and festivities celebrating 28 years of the Western Pacific Railroad Museum. On Sunday, August 22 the train returned back to the San Franciso Bay Area. During the westbound run, the Western Pacific Railroad Museum added their prized restored GP20, #2001, to the point of the train from Portola and operated it as far west as Oroville as part of the celebration. Feather River Rails was on scene to capture the train's run through Oroville on Friday and the return run from Rock Creek, in the Feather River Canyon, down to Oroville on Sunday. Included is a couple shots of freight action in the area and also the removal of WP 2001 from the train on Sunday the 22nd.

12:20 PM: The eastbound Feather River Express departs Oroville with P42DC's #201 & #189 in the lead.
1:34 PM: The westbound "Rocklin Rocket" local (LR64) comes past the former WP depot, now Western Pacific Brewing & Dining (see link below) with UP GP60 #2054 (nee SP #9748) and UP GP38-2 #1376 (nee SP #7608) pulling 13 cars. Note the SP caboose, or "shoving platform" as the second car. This local operates regularly with a shoving platform to assure safer and more convenient switching conditions. It is uncommon to see this local operating this far east into town, nonetheless on this day it is returning from a rock quarry 14 rail miles northeast of town.
1:54 PM: Moments later, BNSF train H-EVEBAR9-18 slowly approaches. It is running under restricted speed due to the LR64 performing some switching off of the mainline up ahead. The train receives permission to proceed into the next siding at maximum authorized track speed where it will be meeting an eastbound.

11:49 AM: The westbound Feather River Express with WP 2001 now in the lead crosses Rock Creek trestle west of Tobin in the Feather River Canyon.
1:13 PM: Arriving at Oroville, the crew of the 2001 makes an appearance for a brief photoshoot before uncoupling the unit. Once uncoupled, the 2001 proceeds down to the Oroville yard office ahead of the special.
1:20 PM: After the WP 2001 has reported clear of the main, the Feather River Express slowly proceeds westward. It will stop momentarily at Mitchell Avenue giving me just enough time to get ahead of it again.
1:37 PM: The final rollby of the train is at the west end of the yard at Oroville.
