I found this facinating. I would recommend withholding the cue until he is doing the desired behavior. Like hitting the bell predictably, for example. Until he learns the behavior, and you can anticipate when he's about to hit it, it doesn't really help to have him associate that cue with behaviors other than hitting the bell.
