The great contralto in fine voice. The bass who sings two phrases on this recording is Herbert Witherspoon, a Metropolitan Opera Bass who was appointed General Manager of the Met when Gatti-Casazza retired in 1935. Sadly Witherspoon died a mere two weeks after his appointment.

  • Unfortunate is the Wotan who does not heed this Erda's warning. Sung and declaimed with great authority. She is indeed the all knowing and stern earth goddess. Unlike most modern Erda's, her tone is clear and firm. Her diction is clear. She doesn't have to shift gears in the lower register.

    Gatti retired in 1935.

  • @Bivolari Yes, she is all authority, no doubt about that. Thanks for the Gatti correction. I'll change it. I'm sort of shaken at the moment anyway, I just managed to wipe out 18 videos--about two weeks' work, and I'm basically homicidal. But I'll make that change....see if I can manage it without deleting my entire channel:)

  • I'm sorry to hear about what happened and hope everything will turn out fine. Meanwhile, thank you so much again for presenting this great artist in the repertoire in which she virtually reigns supreme.

  • @meltzerboy I meant to say mother-Earth goddess.

  • Schumann-Heink was the Erda--the mother-goddess--of the ages, both on stage and off. Thanks, Edmund!

I noticed a few of your videos were missing, but thought you were revising them. How frustrating! I do that kind of thing all the time with my research online.

  • @EdmundStAustell As Brangaene so aptly put it, "Habet ach".........
