Евгений Онегин (П.И. Чайковского), Действие 1ое Картина 1ая.
The Metropolitan Opera's production of Tchaikovsky's most popular opera.
You can find an English translation of the libretto at:
http://www.opera-guide.ch/libretto.php?id=373&uilang=en&lang=en
It seems to follow the translation of Pushkin's verse novel by Charles H. Johnston.

Performers: Renee Fleming (Tatiana), Elena Zaremba (Olga), Ramon Vargas (Lenski), Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Onegin), Svetlana Volkova (Mme. Larina), Larisa Shevchenko (Filippyevna), Sergei Aleksashkin (Prince Gremin), Jean-Paul Fouchecourt (Monsieur Triquet), Richard Bernstein (Zaretsky), Keith Miller (Captain), and Linda Gelinas and Sam Meredith (Dancers).
Production: Robert Carsen
Conductor: Valery Gergiev
Act 1, Scene 1: The garden of the Larin country estate.
The widowed Madame Larina (mezzo-soprano) and her servant Filippyevna (mezzo-soprano) are sitting outside: her two daughters, Tatyana (soprano) and younger sister Olga (contralto), can be heard from inside the house.

  • Wow, where on earth did they find a jellied manatee to dub Olga?

  • @rt98015 1st of all, she hardly even appears in this scene (Olga is the Tania's sister) which is mostly the mother & servant woman. Anyhow, for someone who understands the language, she is one of the few people here who pronounces the text understandably. On the other hand, Lensky (who should be a young poetic type) seems the most mismatched.

  • I just LOVE the simplicity of the set! Awsome!

  • @khlopovstan Of course Olga doesn't APPEAR, she's singing за кулисами. Did you think I was blind? I was referring to the sound of her voice, which sounds too old and heavy for Olga's young, carefree character. Слыхалиль вы? But I suppose it's a difficult mezzo rôle to cast, especially for the acoustics at the Met...
