People use the term "cover" incorrectly. A cover record is a record that is put out that is almost identical to one already on the charts. The term came about when artists like Pat Boone would cover say a Little Richard's record with the theory being the later recording will mostly get played on soul stations but with Pat's cover version he could have an even bigger hit cause he will get pop play or coverage on other stations. The terms you should use is "remake," "redid," "rendition" etc.
