Vaseline:
Common household product usually used by beginners.
Pros:
1. Can help in the "breaking-in" process with store bought Rubik's cubes.
2. Loosens cube by dissolving a small layer of plastic.
3. Can cut corners decently.
4. Cube moves smoothly.
Cons:
1.Dissolves plastic and speeds up aging process, thus making the cube more fragile and more prone to breaking.
2.Gunks up cube once a large amount of plastic mixes with the vaseline.
3.Disassembly proves to be very messy.
4.To keep cube working, cube must be cleaned every 2-3 weeks.
5.Doesn't really improve speed.
6. I don't really consider it much of a lubricant, just more of a plastic dissolver to loosen the cube.

WD40:
A lubricant usually used for chains, car gears, etc.
Pros:
1. Makes cube slightly more quick than Vaseline.
2. Gets rid of unneeded moisture.
Cons:
1. Drastically reduces ability to cut corners.
2. 7/10 times, the cube seems to get worse after using WD40.
3. Petroleum distillates can have potential to dissolve plastic.
4. Using the quick method, (popping out one edge piece, spraying in, and working in) usually makes the cube stiffer.
6. The smell: smells bad, lasts long, and sticks to your hand.

Silicone Spray.
Pros:
1. Allows the cube to move the fastest out of all the lubricants used.
2. Allows the cube to cut corners the best out of all lubricants used.
3. Moves the smoothest.
4. Evaporates after spraying, which allows the surface to be smooth to keep cube clean and tidy.
5. Overall, just the best lube out there.
Cons:
None.

Jig-A-Loo
Pros:
1. Is almost exactly equal with silicone spray.
2. Used by many professional/expert speedcubers out there.
3. Has same potential as silicone.
4. Overall, usually ties up with silicone.
Cons:
1. Careless use (allowing it to pool around the cubies, using excessive amounts, etc.) will make your cubies melt, thus ruining the cube.

Overall:
Vaseline: 5/10
WD40: 2/10
Silicone Spray: 10/10
Jig-a-Loo: 10/10*

RECOMMENDED LUBRICATION METHODS:
Vaseline: Wipe inside partially disassembled Rubik's Cube.
WD40 and Silicone Spray: Completely disassemble and sweep 1-2 times.
Jig-A-Loo: Pop out edge piece, spray in for about 1/4-1/2 of a second. Repeat for as many edges as you want.

Always work the lubricant in after you are done applying it.

*Jig-A-Loo and Silicone Spray work almost the same, it's just a matter of preference between them.

  • emm you said there is a differant method for jig a loo and silicone spray could you just like the jigaloo pop out 1 peice and spray or is it that it wont work that way

  • @Bigsp4 Sorry for the late response.

For the silicone spray, you could do it like the jig-a-loo way, i just put jig a loo in a different category because it shouldn't be disassembled, because it might pool around your cubies. So:

Silicone works both ways, Jig-A-Loo should be done by popping out a piece and spraying.

  • This is a good review but you shoud to a review to normal crc silicone spray or normal silicone spray to those who cant buy heavy duty or jig-a-loo ;)

  • @RodCuber thanks, i've never tried normal silicone spray before. is it much different?

  • Incorrect, WD40 works very similarly to Jig-a-Loo, My friend and I both own Zhanchis his is lubed with jig-a-loo and mine with WD40, the two are indistinguishable other than his is stickered and mine is the coloured plastic version.

  • @cuberman611 You get it at your local hobby shop.

  • @cuberman611 Just get 50,000W Differential Oil from Traxxas. It's the EXACT same as Lubix, and I got 50cc for seven bucks.

  • Where do you get jig a loo. I can't find it at home depot. Please help I really don't want to spend a lot of money on lubix.

  • @wrnl ummmm, you're putting the lubricant in a cube, you're not eating it and/or using it as sun screen, so I don't think it will give you cancer.

  • i just went from vaseline to WD40 , and i have to say wd40 is actually not that bad it dries off easily on the cube , but i have to admit the smell is TERRIBLE!!!!

  • ??????????????????????????????/

  • food grade silicone spray wont dissolve your cube like heavy duty will. But the best lube out there is Lubix, IMO. specially designed for rubiks cubes.

A Lubix DaYan Guhong will rape any cube, any day.

  • @rprb1957 wd40 will just slide out and bring all the good stuff with it so yes..

  • @xduggyo

How does it effect the skateboard bearings, does it make it harder to ride?
