When you strike the strings with the fingers to produce a good sound you will get the best results when you focus your energy by moving the finger from the upper knuckle of the right hand. This allows for the large muscles of the hand to work the fingers and create the most powerful and strongest tone. It also gives you the most leverage and strength behind the stroke. What you don't want to do is use the midrange knuckle and joint when moving your fingers back toward the palm. This creates tension because it utilizes primarily tendons and not the larger muscles of the right hand. It also doesn't give you enough leverage to move the string down and in. The other thing you want to be sure of is to immediately relax the fingers of the right hand by letting the finger return quickly to its starting position. Just play, relax, and release. Avoid leaving your finger back toward the palm or you will be using unnecessary tension. Also, avoid extending the finger after the stroke. Simply let it return to its relaxed curved position and your hand will be ready to play more notes.
