  • To me he is in the emotion 100%. I have seen him live at a recital last October and, honestly, after 2 songs you completely forget about gestures, movements, whatever. You just sit there and get invited to Simon's universe. I have compared different singers of the same Lied, like "Ständchen", and I find there is noone more in the emotion than Simon is. Since I have seen him there nearly is no other way in singing Lied.

  • @PlusKanal Thank you for your comment, saying what I have always thought! Anyone who is put off seeing Simon in recital because of nervous gestures or whatever are really missing a treat! To them I would say, just close your eyes and LISTEN! There is no-one around at the moment who can sing Lieder better than he does, and only a few who are as good! For me, I wouldn't care if he was doing cartwheels across the stage while singing - that magnificent voice is what matters!!

  • @atelier1975 Well, he does it quite often really and this time it happened a lot. He talks about his habit of mumbling and grumbling himself too so its nothing new. By the way...what comes to thinking about the sound; i think its better for the sound to get rid of compulsive gestures and think about the emotions instead of stressing note after note on "how does my voice sound now". It could make it easier and more free. But then again i'm just a youtube commenter and its always easy to say

  • @stuorme trust me: i know that a singer can use facial expressions in singing ;). But expression and compulsive twitching are different things. You see, if the technique is correct you _dont have to_ make any movements or extra gestures to release the voice in the first place. So, the constant need to move is a sign of uneasiness. There is a difference in when singer is commanding facial expressions (natural) and when facial expressions are commanding the singer making it overly uneasy looking.

  • "schlanken Wipfel"?

  • escamilion: he's a perfect statue compared to Ian Bostridge!

  • @ escamillion - what I think you fail to realise, with respect, is that in front of him are the microphones used by the BBC to broadcast live around the world, the concerts at Wigmore hall (and often record for CD)...

So he's really thinking 100% about the sound.

  • @escamillion i agree with your comment. in the situation of a recital you can do so much with a turn of your eye sight or your facial expression. it actually looks like he is using the movement to free his voice which would be stupid of me to say because its simon keenlyside, one of the best baritones around today.
