This effects test was made entirely in Adobe After Effects.

Here is the basic rundown of this effect:
Use CC Rain to create the rain, and set the transfer mode of the solid to screen. Adjust the thickness and speed to your liking.
I used a small curves adjustment by lowering the RGB and Red, and increasing the blue with two curves of green. (down, then up)
I also motion tracked the video and applied it to a null, and parented the rain and the lightning bolts (solid, one frame long, with the lightning plugin applied), to the null.

I got most of my sound effects from: www.findsounds.com

  • where is the transfer mode button im new to adobe

  • You can change the transfer mode by toggling the F4 Button. On the timeline window, it will turn on the transfer mode options.

  • How did you Get AE bwt I'm really wanting it lol

  • My dad is a graphic designer, so I use his version of AE. :D

  • Shouldn't the ground be wet, with rain drops hitting it?

  • The whole Effect is awesome, including the lightning, but the effect of the lightning hitting the street lights is visible that isn't real. The rest is wonderful!!!!

  • Looks good! Thanks!

  • Hey very well done with this video. one quick tip to make this a whole lot better. if you go to a website like videocopilot or something like that you can find out how to change the sky. if you would've made dark clouds in the sky it would've been a lot cooler. but overall very well done!

  • Really good, I would just say make it darker.

  • Weird how the sun is raining.

  • tutorial please? :(

  • how did u make the rain?

  • You could have added a adjustment layer to make it look more ominous if not a sky placement but good job all in all.

  • that looked really nice, however it would have looked more like a storm if you done a sky replacement, I mean it should be cloudy with heavy rain, right?
