The higher proportion of illiterate women in Minia was due to the fact that women need to spend a significant amount of time in taking care of animals, feeding them , cleaning wastes in addition to their usually domestic responsibilities. Poor wastes management exposed women and children to harmful emissions.

With the financial support of GEF Small Grants programme, 20 Bio-Gas Unit were installed in five villiages. In Bio-gas Unit, organic wastes was collected in specially designed and isolated unit. Bio-gas was released and then used for cooking. They were constructed by using inexpensive materials and with the help of single expert, locals were able to construct units by themselves.
The main objective of the project is to encourage and promote use of clean energy in cooking. To disseminate bio-gas technology in rural area benefiting from human and animal wastes improved general health of family, especially children. A campaigned was launched to expand using of this technology.
