Sid's death was a surprise since media sources were not like they are now and most like myself did not know Don Murray wanted out. The night he died was a shock. It was very unusual in 1980 for a major character in a prime time show to be killed off. The episode after he died was incredibly moving. In the final scene when Ginger tells Kenny to let Karen hold their newborn baby she finally starts to grieve. Michele Lee was magnificent and heartbreaking.
@leonbrain68 I wish they had brought Annie back. She brought a lot of intense drama, and I would have liked to have seen the affect upon the other kids, especially Diana. I also would have liked to have seen how Karen and Sid would have worked through it. That is true about Abby breaking up Gary and Val. I don't think she would have wanted Sid to have seen that side of her. The underhanded things she did before he died, she did behind his back.
@snoops71 Yeah, you've got a point. I do believe that they would have brought Annie Fairgate back. As to Abby breaking up Val and Gary, they might have changed this altoghether if Sid was still there.
@leonbrain68 Sid and Karen did indeed have issues, although they deeply loved one another. That's what made them so realistic. Pam and Bobby to me weren't as solid or stable as Sid and Karen. It got to point Pam was always leaving Bobby, and they let the deceptions and manipulations of others break them up. What's your theory on why Karen and Mac never split? The writers did plan for Mac to have an affair with Anne, but Michele Lee objected, saying one stable couple was needed.
@leonbrain68 So have I. Would he and Karen have stayed together ( I think they would have), and what would he have thought about little sister Abby busting up Gary and Val? I also don't think Diana would have gotten to be so rebellious, either.

@snoops71 No, I feel that they would have found a reason to break up Sid and Karen, that's what they
typically do to the 'perfect' couple (See Pam and Bobby in Dallas). I think they might have brought back
Karen Allen as Sid's troubled daughter. If you look at the pilot, Karen and Sid had a lot more problems
due to that daugther than in the rest of the series.

Man, I always wondered in which direction Knots would have gone had Don Murray stayed on.

Sid Fairgate is my favorite character in Knots Landing.
I fell completely in love with him and his character.
