SOUNDS OF GLOBAL WORSHIP
SENEGAL, WEST AFRICA: URBAN, FRENCH
Antoine Diompy has accomplished something very significant with this composition, Comme-ci Comme çà (Like This Like That). As a Christian musician, he has used his unique cultural musical form to offer songs about his faith. The instrument featured is the Kora.
Wikipedia has this to say about the kora . . .
A kora is built from a large calabash cut in half and covered with cow skin to make a resonator, and has a notched bridge like a lute or guitar. The sound of a kora resembles that of a harp, though when played in the traditional style, it bears a closer resemblance to flamenco and delta blues guitar techniques. The player uses only the thumb and index finger of both hands to pluck the strings in polyrhythmic patterns (using the remaining fingers to secure the instrument by holding the hand posts on either side of the strings). Ostinato riffs ("Kumbengo") and improvised solo runs ("Birimintingo") are played at the same time by skilled players.
Kora players have traditionally come from griot families (also from the Mandinka tribes) who are traditional historians, genealogists and storytellers who pass their skills on to their descendants. The instrument is played in Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Senegal, and The Gambia. A traditional kora player is called a Jali, similar to a 'bard' or oral historian.
Traditional koras feature 21 strings, eleven played by the left hand and ten by the right (end quote from Wikipedia).
It is noteworthy that the traditional use of the kora is for story-telling and history. Therefore, It is significant that the kora would take up this same purpose in the hands of this Christian musician to tell his story of faith..
LYRICS TO THE SONG . . .
COMME-CI COMME CA
LIKE THIS LIKE THAT
Danser sous la pluie sans se mouiller
To dance in the rain without getting wet
bouger en sachant où mettre ses pieds
To move while knowing where to put your feet
Bouger tout son corps danser sans cesse
To move all of your body to dance without stopping
être tout en sueur dans son business
To be covered in sweat in your business
prendre son partenaire dans ses bras
To take your partner in your arms
sans se salir sans se mouiller cette danse sappelle comme-ci comme çà
Without getting messy, without getting wet, this dance is called Like This Like That
Cest comme-ci cest comme çà
It is like this, it is like that
prends garde à toi comme-ci comme çà
Take attention, Like This Like That
Sauter et tourner jusquau vertige
To jump and turn until your dizzy
une heure te suffira pour que tu pige
one hour will be sufficient for what you get
cest pas si difficile mets-toi en piste
it is not that difficult to put yourself in the ring
fais bouger ton corps pour Jésus christ
make your body move for Jesus Christ
Cest pas une course mais cest un art
it is not a race but it is an art
suffit dêtre rusé comme un renard
enough to be cunning like a fox
ainsi éviter tous les faux pas
also to avoid all of the mistakes
cest la rigodon des rigolos cette danse sappelle comme-ci comme çà
it is a comical rigadoon this dance that is called Like This Like That
(note : a rigadoon is a lively dance of the 17th and 18th century)
Entends au loin cest le tam-tam qui appelle
Listen in the distance to the drums that call
prépare-toi mets-toi en selle
Prepare yourself, put yourself in the saddle
les filles se font belles tout l monde est prêt pour le bal
The girls are all dressed up, everyone is ready for the ball
on y entre pas les mains sales
No one can enter with dirty hands
Danse au rythme du tam-tam
Dance to the rhythm of the drums
mets-y tout ton âme
With all of your soul
danse au rythme du tam-tam
Dance to the rhythm of the drums
pour sauver ton âme
To save your soul
Bouge jusquà 20 à la 1 à la 2 jusquà 20
Move until 20, and a one and a two, until 20
attention aux pots-de-vin
Watch out for the pots of wine.
