Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question about lessening the overwhelm of learning chords on the neck.

Q: Hi! Ive been playing the guitar for quite a few years now and Im pretty happy with the progress I have made. But lately I have grown frustrated by the lack of chord voicing ideas I have. I try to force every chord into the same barre fingering. I do have access to the information of all the possible inversions and voicings I could ever want i.e., books and the internet, but thats part of the problem. Theres so much information, literally hundreds of pages of different voicings, and I just dont know where to start. So, finally to the question: Have you, over the course of your career, noticed some effective ways of learning different voicings, without being drowned under the flood of information at the very beginning.
- Seppo, Lappeenranta, Finland

Learning chords can be a real killer, however if approached in a logical way by looking at the string sets vs. chord roots, and understanding a little info. about chord construction and intervals, the process can be greatly simplified.

Totally agree, learning songs is tough man, but I can memorize a progression or scale pattern really fast. Glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's weird!

  • I never understood people... I'm fascinated by theory and can't stop practicing scale and trying to improvise... though on the other hand learning songs is a torture for me... weird huh?
