Compiz Fusion: Protect Your Personal Data

I had to reinstall my operating system using Ubuntu 9.10 Linux after making many adjustments to Compiz Fusion. I added many ad-ons to FireFox web browser as well. I do not know what was in conflict, but I lost the minimize, maximize, and close buttons in my web browser. The only remedy I could come up with was to reinstall the OS. I tried to back up my personal data, but was not successful. I lost my photos, videos, and documents. The documents were free, but the photos, and videos I can not reproduce. Moral to be learned: Get good at backing up your personal data!

Place your home directory on a separate partition. That way you can do whatever you want with your OS partition (modify, reinstall, change, etc) without messing with your personal data.
