Shannon Sanders performs "Put You On" from his forth coming "Grownman Handbook" at B.B. Kings as part of the Music City Soul Series on Thursday, February 18th, 2010.
There's a great chance that you're a Shannon Sanders fan without even knowing it. Although this Grammy-winning producer is perhaps best-known for his impressive list of writing and production credits on all three of the platinum-selling soul artist, India.Arie's LPs (Video? Brown Skin? The Truth? I Am Not My Hair? Yep, all his alongside his partner, Drew Ramsey), his artistic collaborations certainly don't stop there.
As an artist born with an ear for good music, a mind for creating it and the deep, innate passion for making as much of it as possible, this singer/songwriter/arranger/producer/musician has also worked with the legendary Temptations; country music phenom Lyle Lovett; R&B favorites Heather Headley and Eric Benet; rap artist Young Buck; gospel artists CeCe Winans and Nicole C. Mullen and a list of highly-celebrated, "genre-less" artists including Robert Randolph, Marc Broussard and the recent Grammy-winning blues artist Jonny Lang---just to name a few.
Certainly, this all makes Shannon proud, but as with most creative geniuses, no where close to being satisfied.
If you..re a true connoisseur of critically-acclaimed, underground music, then you may know that in 1999, Shannon made his solo debut with the album, ..Outta Nowhere.. (featuring the unofficial, but highly-respected men's anthem, "Hustler" and the original version of Heather Headley's 2006 chart topper, "In My Mind"). Well, for you, there's great news: Recently his love for recording has wooed him back. Later this year, Shannon will release his sophomore project, "The Grown Man Handbook" -- a collection of songs that showcases the professional growth, personal revelations and spiritual progress he's made since entering the music scene.
"When you produce an artist, it's your job to help them discover the highest potential of their own abilities," shares Shannon. "I really enjoy doing that because there's nothing like bringing the vision of a song and a singer together. But, in a lot of ways, it also means I have to focus more on helping make someone else's creative dreams a reality. When you're an artist first, there's always a part of you who wants to take some of that creative energy for yourself."
For Shannon, that time is now.
