Prokofiev died in 1953, 50 minutes before Stalin. Stalin's death virtually obliterated the news of Prokofiev from the media, and when the composer was buried, there were no flowers, because all had been used for Stalin's state funeral. Richter laid one pine bough and Oistrakh played two movements of this Sonata. The performance would be poignant anyway, but that historcal fact adds to it.
