Merle Haggard's songwriting was beginning to blossom and audiences embraced his music, sending his "I Threw Away the Rose" to No 2 on Billboard country music charts early in 1967. The song began a remarkable streak of 37 straight Top 10 hits, including 23 that went to No.1. "I Threw Away the Rose" was followed by four straight N0. 1hits: "Branded Man," "Sing Me Back Home," he Legend of Bonnie and Clyde" and "Mama Tried," and it was these songs that launched his successful career that spanned four decades. He eventually racked up 38 No. 1 chart songs.

  • Great song you can tell he is pretty young here.

  • Probably mid-30s.

  • Now that is country.

  • I have never heard a complete song by Keith Urban or Dierks Bently...they are horrible. And Kenny Chesney...beyond horrible. I do like Gary Alan. Country just isn't country anymore.

  • Damnit, I wanna get drunk.....

  • The first version I ever heard of this song was Lorrie Morgan's from "Mama's Hungry Eyes: A Tribute To Merle Haggard" (1994). She changed "I" to "you" making the song about some one else (obviously meaning her late husband Keith Whitley). I think the song works better that way.

  • merle will never be matched. he continues to astound and please my palate for good country music

  • a great song by a great singer the hagg is the king!!!!!

  • Applaud, Applaud, Applaud, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Hagfan789 I think his voice was still the same even when he got older, it's still effortless.

  • Merle was about 29 years old here. It's Ralph Mooney on steel, one of his greatest performances. There was a great movie in the 60's starring Jack Lemmon "The days of wine and roses". Hag!!!

  • The reason Merle got such famous voice is that you can hear the tears and pain in it what makes living on Erarth sometimes a Hell, thanks for posting
