i don't think this version is too bad. it may not the the most passionate of performances, but it's surely sung nicely and accompanied by good arrangements. i like the atmosphere of it.
moreover, i think that by doing this version, nick cave tries to bring this sad and dark love song just a bit easier, a bit lighter. something which, i think, is not too bad an idea. in these times of global economical crices, bomb attacks and starvation, we might do with a bit of cheer.

Personally, I just love the fact that Nick and the Bad Seeds can make such contradictory music. Lyrics and musical arrangement dont always seem to matter, it is the emotion that it encourages that I love. The ship song, and the mercy seat are two really good examples of this. In essence it seems to be a song of great love and joy, but the music doest reflect that. Sad and depressing yes, but equally joyful and hopeful as well.
