During World War 2 the United States Office of Strategic Services & National Defence Research Committee performed a number of tests to determine the most effective way to disrupt enemy railroad services. The "Mole" was an explosive device designed to automatically detonate when light levels dropped, such as when a train entered a tunnel. This film shows how the Mole was made, as well as various tests to determine the most effective location to place the Mole. Needless to say there's quite a few trains being blown up, derailed, or otherwise wrecked in this movie!

  • Much easier ways to derail a train. Or were the tracks guarded or inspected before a train approached?

  • @robertgift

Railways were a significant asset in WW2 for transport purposes and heavily guarded. Tunnels often had guards posted 24/7 as it was well known an 'accident' in a tunnel is a lot harder to clean up than one on open ground, and if you could damage the tunnel causing a collapse all the better.

  • Shit, they be talking about moles and I am thinking, snitch !

  • @wdtvlive42 Thanks, 42. I did not know that all tunnels were guarded.

Yes, tunnels and bridges are the best place to cause derailments.

Hazmatrucksuch as gasoline tankers are not allowed to pass through thEisenhower tunnel.

They mustake US 6 over Loveland Pass when it is not closed by snow.

Yesterday an idiotrucker crashed on the final curve coming down US 6 from the pass and spilled a lot of diesel into a creek.

They should have such trucks pass through the tunnels.
