The most limiting factor in the effiecient growth of algae in any system, whether horizontal open ponds or vertical PBRs, is getting the light to the algae. Open ponds are inexpensive to construct and operate but they have low productivity because of the short penetration of light into the culture. PBRs considerably increase the exposure of algae to incident light but are expensive to build and operate. The trick is to provide a light collection and distribution method that can be easily integrated into an open pond architecture that is capable of capturing incident sun light all through the day all through the year and distribute it throughout the culture volume without tracking and with minimum loss of photons. This is the challenge to which Algaenesis provides a solution. www.algaenesis.com
