One of our favorite day trips is to drive about an hour north from Salinas to Montañita, Ecuador. This is a laid back beach town, popular with surfers, foreign visitors and Ecuadorians. There are many good restaurants offering a variety of international fare and most of the businesses have someone on staff who can speak English. You won't find any five star hotels here; off season a room with private bath at a hostal runs about $15 per night. What you will find are nice people and a unique beach town unlike any other in Ecuador.
