Communities are coming together and standing up to the corporate polluters in their backyards. As part of our Coal Free Future tour, Greenpeace visited Wilmington, NC to support citizen activists like Brinkley Hutchings, Kayne Darrell and Andy Wood, who are working to shut down coal plants, prevent the construction of a coal-burning cement plant and bring more renewable energy to their communities.

Every year, coal-fired power plants spew millions of tons of toxic pollution into our air and water. From mercury to climate change-fueling carbon dioxide, these pollutants put the health and well-being of millions of Americans at risk.

What we are doing in Wilmington is protesting a cement plant, which uses coal to power it. While we should be working towards new ways of producing energy, the biggest issue we have right now is Titan Cement who will be pumping even MORE mercury and other toxins into our already polluted environment.

  • Communities like these are springing back to life thanks to the youth movement in America, people are sick and tired of letting coal companies walk all over their lives, POWERSHIFT 2011!

  • This is the first time I have heard of Green Peace. I looked at your website and I think its great that you guys are doing this. A lot of people out there don't care about whats healthy for us and what isn't. Being only 19 yrs old, I worry about a lot of things in this world that hurts us and the environment. I'm thinking of volunteering to not only help the environment but to help the future and our children.

    God Bless you!

  • But, still now, I do think I should provide him a helping hand.

I should help to create him a sustainable job, a better healthcare and education for his children and so on.

It's would be wonderful if Green peace support more for green bussiness and better education and healthcare

  • 1. chase all the birds up as they are going to land on his trap

    2. persuade the guy that the birds are useful for the crop and he should not do that.

    3. persuade other that they should not buy the birds as ....

    4. buy the birds from him then free them.

  • Dear Green Peace,

Thank you for what you have been doing and what a nice work you have done! Please keep going.

I am writing to you to offer a nice idea for your work.

Long ago, I saw a man catching birds. My elder brother bought him some twenty alive birds hoping for delicous meal at home.

It's common in my country, Viet Nam. Once idea came into my mind is How to save the birds?

  • This protesting is a waste of time. If you really want to make a difference than stop buying your electricity from them. put up off grid solar and wind on your house, than cut yourself off from the electrical grid. Nothing will ever change until customers stop buying electricity produced at these plants. But, if it makes you feel good than walk around in groups, chanting and holding signs.
