Here's a "VERY" rare collection of Mabuni Kenwa photos - presenting Suparinpei kata. While prolific as an author, and featuring many historically important photos in his several karate publications, these photos are particularly significant as they had never been published. Shot in the garden of the Konishi's Tokyo residence some of the photos have been lost over time.

Mabuni was a close friend and classmate of Miyagi Chojun's, under the tutelage of Higaonna Kanryo, and the two traveled from Okinawa to Tokyo in 1928, where they met with Funakoshi Gichin, and Konishi Yasuhiro. Suparinpei is representative of Higaonna's lineage.

  • Thankyou for uploading and sharing, great presentation, Osu

  • That´s also my doubt, Even in modern day Shito Ryu this is not the way suparinpei is practised... so seeing Mabuni sensei doing the kata this way raises these questions. thank for uploading

  • Oss Mccarthy sensei! Great material!

One question, though, I've noticed that Mabuni sensei does teisho after the haito uke techniques... this is the only version of suparinpei I've seen that has this. What can you tell us about that?

  • This is so cool

  • Brilliant presentation, as always PM Sensei. Domo!

  • cool stuff!

  • Excellent presentation, Sensei! Simply amazing photos. Thank you.
