BS! The first recording of Rebetika were in the early 1920's, both before and during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1923. These early recording were the very first recorded songs on earth to mention Marijuana.

He doesnt say it sounds like the blues! He says that both blues and rembetika where made by the lower social classes that found their self on the outskirts of respectable society. Also that their music reflects their harsness and pain of living on the outside.
