Oleg Boshnyakovich-piano

НЕ ПОЙ, КРАСАВИЦА, ПРИ МНЕ...
Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin (1799-1837) , no title, 1828, published 1829
Sergei Vasil'yevich Rachmaninov (1873-1943) , "Ne poj, krasavica!", op. 4 no. 4.

Тебя увидев, забываю;
Но ты поешь и предо мной
Его я вновь воображаю.

Не пой, красавица, при мне
Ты песен Грузии печальной:
Напоминают мне оне
Другую жизнь и берег дальный.

Ne poj, krasavitsa, pri mne...
(A. Pushkin)

Ne poj, krasavitsa, pri mne
Ty pesen Gruzii pichal'naj;
Napaminajut mne ane
Druguju zhyzn' i bereg dal'nij.

Uvy, napfminajut mne
Tvai zhestokije napevy
I step', i noch, i pri lune,
Chiny dal'okaj, bednaj devy! . . .

Ja prizrak milyj, rakavoj,
Teb'a uvidiv, zabyvaju
No ty pajosh, i preda mnoju
Jevj ja vnjv' vaabrazhaju.

Ne poj, krasavitsa, pri mne, etc.

Let me not hear you sing, my beauty.. .

Let me not hear you sing, my beauty,
you with your songs of sad Georgia;
they remind me
of another life and of a distant shore.

Alas, your cruel melodies
bring to my mind
the steppe, the night and, in the moonlight,
the face of a poor, far-away maiden!. . .

Seeing you, I forget
the dear and fateful apparition!
But you sing, and
1 imagine it again before me.

Let me not hear you sing, etc.

Translation by Anton Bespalov:
Do not sing, my beauty, to me
your sad songs of Georgia;
they remind me
of that other life and distant shore.

Alas, They remind me,
your cruel melodies,
of the steppe, the night and moonlit
features of a poor, distant maiden!

That sweet and fateful apparition
I forget when you appear;
but you sing, and before me
I picture that image anew.

  • Did he ever record this? If he did, I can't find it anywhere, what with all the different translations of the title...

  • @IfYourMomWereATaco Yes, it's on his compilation CD Portrait and first it was released on his early 90's Russian Romances CD. If you prefer his matured voice, this song is also featured on his latest Pushkin Romances. Literal translation of the title is "Don't sing, beautiful girl, around me/near me", but I took all translations from The Lied and Art Song Text Page (thank them)

  • Actually the title means, Don't Sing, my beauty, not let me not hear you sing. lol

  • I took this translation from a site dedicated to lieder texts and translations. You're welcome to provide us a better translation ;-)

  • I want the score for this piece soooo bad xD

  • Webarton, try IMSLP. It's Rachmaninoff's opus 4, no. 4

  • This is one of my top three favorites that Dmitri sings. He puts every ounce of passion into each note.

    (I wonder if he kept the pianist....)

  • you know I am not a fan of Hvorostovsky and his voice, and I promised you something, you know what I mean ;). But I must admit he sings this beautiful music very aesthetic and full of heart.

  • Does anyone have the score in F-, E-, or E flat minor? I've been looking for sheet music for this song forever but A minor and F sharp minor are too high for me.

  • Superb music and singing as well. TY Leo for yet another gem.

  • Now his voice is much fuller,deeper, technically equipped with pinpoint frasing and incomparable breathcontrol. Just compare his old and new recordings(romances,arias(Verdi espessially, but not just ), and it'll be obvious to you that the newer is mush superior.

    Take his artistic growth and superb vocal technique. lyrical is not better than Verdian- just a different genre.

    Now this is a gorgeous baritone'in top of his form, able to sing as dramatic as lyric roles perfectly.

  • The best interpreter of Rachmaninoff (and many other composers)

  • A great classical song, really wonderful interpreted! I like this young Hvorostovsky!

  • So beautiful!
