  • Wasn't the Mustang American

  • @HksTopAndRock The Mustang was primarily an American Aircraft but the RAF also had some

  • Technically the P51 uses a Packard V-1650 engine the American version of the Merlin.

  • Well, I was waiting for some Bad comments.

I know I can't please Everyone, but we're all used to calling it the Merlin.

RAF Mustangs used the Merlin. Plus the Mustangs at Duxford have Merlins.

Sorry if this video has caused you any offense Buidseach.

  • i love the turn at 1:15, it sounds so recognizable :)

  • I know, Beachy Head is a great show if the weather's good, Duxford is active most of the year with the sound of the Merlin

  • I ...have just found... my next alarm clock :D

  • @SolihullSteve IIRC later on they all had merlins. so they could fly higher? wasnt the merlin supercharged?, i know hte old ones had hte packards, err not old, but early ww2 units. correct me if im wrong. if i am i'll admit as much

  • Under a bloody bridge!!!

  • Who gives a fuck about what this is or what that is, just listen to the noise of that engine, the best piston engine along with the Griffon ever produced!

  • @HksTopAndRock Initally they were used by the RAF but with rubbish Allison engines. Rolls Royce engineers were so impressed with its low level performance they started swapping Merlin 65/66 engines into the engine bay to see what might happen.

The resulting aircraft was so impressive, the Americans (usually reluctant to us British bits on its own kit) put it straight into production, fitted some drop tanks, and the rest is history :)

  • @buidseach The name 'Merlin' applies to both the RR and Packard produced versions. The Packard engine was based on a Merlin XX and called the Packard Merlin 28. Most of these were initially used in bombers and had minor modifications like different bearing metalurgy but it was essentially the same engine.

The engine in the Mustang had a different supercharger fitted which gave it better high altitude performance.

I'd love to have one in old peugeot 306 ;)

  • Music to my ears what a lovely noise.

  • it is o .k
