  • "what comes doesn't beat a drum" great...

  • @oracleofaltoona After I read 'the old patagonian express' I was hooked. One of the few paperbacks I don't throw away.

  • An Air Force officer talked to me about Paul Theroux back in 1978 so I decided to read something by him. It turned out I loved his travel books like The Great Railway Bazaar, and then later The Old Patagonian Express. I had traveled several times by rail between Air Force duty stations in the 1960's before the private passenger railroads went away. I also traveled by rail several times in Mexico and in 1988 in Australia. Anybody that is fascinated by rail travel would enjoy his books.

  • You know why I like him? Because he is a skilled and consummate craftsman/artist -- yet he has a very down to earth manner. And it's not false humility. He is just very practical and earthy. I really like him a lot. I read a short story recently that he wrote (set in Africa) and it was absolute genius.

  • Interesting work.
