Could this substitute the WASD keys in a FPS?
Some are even open-source (ex Quake3), so it's possible to patch it to support this device.

No, the SpaceNavigator is a 3D mouse, it does not move a cursor. As far as gaming, there are no games that work with the device. Adobe Acrobat: Yes, you can manipulate 3D objects in Acrobat. Adobe Photoshop as well.
