Okay, so I know this one does not have that sacred feel, but remember some parishes do use modern up beat styles weekly, but mostly for youth masses. I'm trying to imagine how this would sound on an organ. It might work if it's slowed down. I don't know. What do you think?

I do music for a youth mass... I really really don't like this version. However a lot of people seem to like it.

To me it isn't even very youth friendly. I don't think the rhythms harmonies or melodies are that relevant to our youth. This music sounds like somebody older trying to sound hip.

My favorite movement is the Lenten Gospel Acclamation. It portrays the reflective time of Lent.

This Mass is beautiful. We play it with 2 guitars and a piano. Our choir members range from age 40 to almost 90. We are all very inspired by the power and faith it conveys. Just because a young man wrote it doesn't mean it is for the young and that it lacks spiritual depth.

I'm glad you all stuck it out and tried it with piano and organ! There are a lot of songs we hear and do not care for until we try it ourselves. You can get an idea of how it CAN sound. It's hard to do that if a musician is not versatile enough or does not have an ear or vision beyond hearing a song for the first time. We love it too at our traditional services and youth one.

I agree that a number of contemporary songs in OPC and other publishing houses are too watered down, but not all of them are. As long as our focus on communion and the liturgy stay strong and central, we will be fine. We have to make sure we pass on our traditional music that lends itself to the sacredness of mass, and pick modern music that does the same, while keeping our hearts right before God as we serve others and honor Him in the way we live. I hope we can stop all this bickering.

Don't criticize other Christian churches. How ridiculously far off. I understand not making the music the FOCUS, but to assume people are ME centered based on your comments is so far off. Wake up people, and jump off the ship of critcism and judgmentalism. Our heritage is CHRIST, not a style of music. I love traditional music and I love modern music. I prefer scripture based music which the Catholic Church does a beautiful job at keeping alive and hearing new music is wonderful!!

I agree. SACREDNESS comes from the INSIDE OUT. We are a 2000 year plus old Church with a number of traditional and modern music. What makes masses great are the people loving Christ by serving each other and living according to His will, not an opinion about the music.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. This mass setting can be played with an either traditional or modern feel. The repetition of chord progressions and melody lines are meant to help the congregation remember the music easier, and weaves a common thread throughout the mass settings. I am 43 years old and have been playing/singing mass settings since a young teen. Music will NEVER be the focus--COMMUNION always will be. Mr. Stephan, beautiful job! I hope to see more of your work.

I like (sic) that notion: "they now lead us". It's important to be open to the ideas of young people, but it's also important to keep the traditions of their faith community alive. As for the Episcpal Church not using pianos and guitars, that's not accurate, but the Episcopal Church most certainly does favor the organ in its worship.
