There absolutely is a need for it if you're shooting with video cameras in the field and they use HDMI to connect to external video recorders. I'd agree with you about home installs as those components will not be moving around, but camcorders are a whole other thing. P.S. just because YOU can't imagine a need doesn't mean there isn't one! ;-)
