@interstates Svetlana actually did tell officials that something was off with the vault but they ignored her due to her bad attitude. only once Allana backs her up and mentions do the officials check
-
@TJ347 And there are many, MANY American gymnasts who have surpassed Khorkina with the number of medals won. Give me a break.
-
@TJ347 Khorkina did not deserve it. Nobody deserves it; you have to earn it. She was and is a joke.
-
So....only when an Australian showed concern did they do anything?
-
If she repeated her vault and stick it it would improve her score signnificantly, but she had come for GOLD, she had qualidied first, she wanted to be first, since she couldn't do that it really didn't matter to her if she's be 15th or 10th. A vault in the wrong height is a huge deal, the competition should have stopped and start all over.
But good think is that Svetlana doesn't need a gold to prove that she is a legend
-
Many years later (I think in 2008) she was asked by a Chinese program why she didn't repeat her vault, and her reply was "This is the Olympics. This is not a game in your home backyard. You don't get second tries. It will only hurt the prestige of the event."

I've been desperately trying to find out what amends were made to affected gymnasts and nada! Svetlana maybe it messed with her head, but Reeder fell and hurt herself off this apparatus issue and the offer to try again is utterly moot. Even stopping the event there and then, which should absolutely have happened, is no use to a gymnast who's gone out injured.

Khorkina deserved the gold, all of her routines were very unique and difficult at the time. In addition, she herself was the most unique and artistic gymnast during that Olympic period. Her first exercise floor, was phenomenal and it was likely she would hit the rest of her routines, if not for the vault fiasco. It's a shame the officials couldn't decide to scratch the entire day and reschedule another day for all around.

@BoraBoraGirl2001 Get real. Khorkina is internationally recognized for her accomplishments, and an American gymnast who won the overall ribbon at the Iowa State Gymnastics Invitational twenty times can hardly put those ribbons up against even one of Sveta's international awards. To say otherwise is the definition of delusional, as is your claim that MANY American gymnasts have more medals, which is a blatant and easily disproven lie besides.
-
@TJ347 Are you deluded? Other than on bars, Khorkina was not that great. Many American gymnasts both past and present are FAR better than she was, and they have the medals to prove it.
just when i was watching this live, the competition should have been STOPPED IMMEDIATELY when they realized the vault was wrong, all coaches and gymnasts should have been notified and told they'd be able to try it again..... it should not have continued when they knew there was a problem... svetlana could have easily still won this made me so mad the entire aa was tainted, and then with the romanian winning controversy blah

I don't get it....So many falls and they don't ever question it could be the apparatus and not the gymnasts?!!? Like it's common for SO MANY elite gymnasts competing at that level to fall consistently on 1 apparatus? It does not make sense! But what infuriates me is that only when the Australian Allana Slater says something do they even BOTHER to check!! Idk why no one's ever mentioned that anomaly either.
