Same for me in Britain. But the conservatives in Australia are called Liberals, which is confusing for outsiders!

Weird how in 1980 the colours reversed. in the rest of the world its still true blue conservative and commie red. Did the American media make this change to stop the neo socialist democrats being called "reds"

The colours reversed for no political reasons. Gradually more networks began changing the colours.
Secondly, the Democrats are not socialists. You should look at other parties around the world if that is your observation.
