One Million Milestone
13 Dec, 2007 :: Manila, Phillipines

Coming in December, the moment nearly never happened. The first visitors to Doulos in 2007 stepped on board during the ship's January visit to Manila, the Philippines. Now back in the city, crew have just welcomed the one millionth person to visit the ship this year! Mother of two Fritzie Nabalitan arrived with her family and was immediately greeted by Doulos Captain Ashley McDonald (Australia). Wearing a special sash reading 'One Million in 2007' Fritzie had a tour of the ship and received a voucher to use in the book fair. The milestone figure gave crew cause to reflect on all that has happened during a busy year on board and the 999,999 visitors that stepped on board before Fritzie.

Lighting Young Lives
20 Dec, 2007 :: Manila, Philippines

As the sun breaks the dark of the early morning, children can be seen fast asleep among piles of garbage and filth in one of Manila's poorest districts. These street children live among the chaos of a 24-hour market. The noise never ceases as they sleepily shut their eyes at night or drearily opening them to one more morning. Joining a local organisation's existing programme, Doulos crew have been distributing bread and milk to these needy youngsters. Although the numbers who need assistance are more than can be catered for, crew hope their actions brought some light into the children's lives.

Let The Children Come
10 Jan, 2008 :: Subic Bay, Philippines

"For them, this is something really special!" observed Ester Banzi (South Africa). Throughout the visit to Subic Bay, crew have been moved by the plight of region's street children. Seeking to bring some joy into their lives, an afternoon of games and songs was organised on Doulos for 80 of the youngsters. As they entered, the boys and girls ran to windows, danced, spun cartwheels and looked on with excited wonder. Throughout the afternoon, a carefully planned programme communicated how each of the youngsters was loved and valued. The fun activities finished with food from a nearby fast food restaurant -- a treat the children could never normally experience. Crew were particularly touched by those youngsters who chose to set aside a little of the meal to bring to their parents. "They will never forget this," declared Cel Rosario (Philippines).
