What is the purpose of this movement?

SGI-USA is the American branch of an international organization of Buddhist peace activists, holding NGO status with the United Nations and supporting such initiatives as the Earth Charter, as well as other human rights and environmental protection initiatives. Based on the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism — a philosophy that places highest value on respecting the sanctity of all life — practitioners engage in "human revolution," a lifelong process of inner transformation and efforts to live in a confident and value-creative way. The practice emphasizes the simultaneity of individual happiness and the betterment of society.

The Rock The Era movement is a youth initiative to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soka Gakkai International and 50th anniversary of SGI-USA, under the leadership of Honorary President Daisaku Ikeda, whom members call "Sensei," the Japanese word for teacher or mentor. Members view Ikeda as a model Buddhist practitioner whose prolific accomplishments for peace serve as inspiration for every person to manifest his or her own inner potential.

What makes this festival unique?

Unlike most ordinary cultural or music festivals, the participants of Rock The Era are not all professional or even experienced performers. Rather, they are young people from all walks of life who have decided to challenge themselves in order to make a statement to America.

"The purpose of the SGI is to advance world peace by empowering individuals," says Leonard Bogdonoff, a behind-the-scene participant in California. "Rock The Era is a celebration of young people's interests and, at the same time, a revolutionary youth movement that allows young people to challenge themselves in a specific field and then share their progress with the world. In this way, the role an individual decides to take becomes their personal means of advancing world peace by challenging and overcoming their own doubt, while simultaneously encouraging the people around them.
