The town council actually arranged the hole thing as a publicity stunt , the real Mr Scopes was recruited by the mayor as a volunteer to help the ACLU challenge the butler act , with the hope that it would bring a controversial trial to Dayton Tennessee & attract national attention with the hope it would boost their ailing economy, the hole thing was staged & exaggerated by the yellow press.
The film is very loosely based on what happened in 1925, The real point the writers & directors were trying to make was a case against McCarthyism, if you actually looked the real court transcripts & the facts surrounding the real scopes monkey trial you'd know that it was nothing like what the movie depicts it as,
This film was one of the last truly great Black and white films and a superb actors duel between giants. It also showed up the far right for what they were then and still are. another commenter said it made christians look stupid. Bullshit, Christians make themselves look stupid with their far right crap all the time.
@icewomen881 The movie was made to make Christians look stupid? Really? Out of all conceivable things the movie does, its one point is to make Christians look stupid? Bar the fact that the person on trial who we're rooting for is a Christian? If there's one person who's made to look stupid in the entirety of the movie, it's the fundamental Christians willing to stifle everyone else's voice and ideas for the sake of their own - and them looking stupid is on no account of what the movie does
@icewomen881 - That's a bit simplistic. The movie is based on a pretty successful 1955 Broadway play. And while it's probably fair to say that the play was not intended to make the supporters of the Tennessee anti-evolution law look good, I don't think Christ himself ever came down on one side or the other of the neo-Darwinian synthesis question.
hey guys can any1 give me like a 3 paaragraph summary or a short summary like kind of quick please

@icewomen881 And it's statements like that that make people think Christians are stupid without even watching the movie
