6 weeks prior to the Launch of Apollo 11, NASA commissioned Theo Kamecke to document the Apollo 11 mission and create a time capsule. 40 Years later, this amazing film has been restored from the original 35mm film and released to the public for the first time.

  • I want to know why we're supposed to pay for this film when it was commissioned by NASA and paid for by the American taxpayers.

Anything NASA produces is supposed to be in the public domain.

I do love this film though. It really captures the feel of the time.

  • Dear DCS002,

Appreciate your comments regarding this film, but you need to understand that the film has gone through an expensive process to be restored. Up until now you could only get your hands on a "ropey" copy, but this had picture interference / sound issues, and was nowhere near up to the quality that we have produced. A group of individuals including myself have invested heavily so that people could see this film in it's glory. NASA have given their consent and fully support this.

  • Really appreciate the efforts of the BHPGroup - frankly, I didn't think I'd ever see the film again and like anybody who saw it all those years ago and enjoyed it then, I really am looking forward to seeing the improved copy on Discovery and buying a DVD. I am also surprised that the BBC did not show the 'World About Us' documentary on John Young, 'The Ultimate Explorer' shown in 1982 and 83 -I have a very 'grainy' copy of the '83 broadcast and must see if there are any clips on 'Youtube'.

  • You will particularly like the DVD's extra's. The DVD is a 2 disk set which includes the film in both it's original 4:3 and new 16:9 vesion. There is also a 30 minute feature with the Director (creating the timecapsule), + 2 other features including the "return to the film" when Theo went back to the edit suite and saw the film for the first time in 40 years. There is also his original treatment, production stills and superb images from NASA.. Oh not to forget Directors Commentary... HAVE FUN!

  • no stars in any photograph or film footage.... what are they hiding? Alien Constructions, Alien bases, Alien craft on the moon, ancient and new ... They blotted out the backgrounds or shot footage on a stage.... why.... i don't believe the irrational diatribe about sun reflection causing lenses to record no stars - they were in the dark side of the moon and also recorded no stars.... to keep up the strange mystery... why? Not a single star ... too weird.

Done 40 years ago? Forty [40] years? The most scientifically historical space claim in ALL history 6 [six] times moonwalks & kaput; without US or any country staying with the explorations; because of excuses? Sounds like American mooncheese to many does it not?

  • all I can say is, it's about effing time! I've searched all over the internet for the last 2 years trying to find this film or clips. NASA TV was showing it every now and then back in 2007. This is by far my very favorite flat screen movie of all time. The only other production i like as much is Passport to the Universe, a planetarium show prod'd by Amer Mus Nat Hist, narrated by Tom Hanks. Humbling. I cry when Iwatch both of these. Thank You!

  • With regard to the visual quality that we saw live and subsequently used since, it may be of interest that the video feed, direct from the Moon as received at the ground station in Australia was ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. (A guy working there took Polaroid snaps of the live pics on the monitor) Why the so called original fuzziness was introduced is a mystery, because thats not how the pics arrived on Earth. The Aussie ground station didnt record the feed, they simply relayed it to the US TV networks.

  • Fantastic to see this film again after 35 years - I still have a cassette sound-tape of the film as shown on BBC 2 on Saturday 20th July 1974, the 5th Anniversary. I will certainly watch it on 'Discovery' Channel and buy the DVD. Would recommend it to anyone. The music and the action and the feel of this film have always stayed with me. I was one of billions lucky enough to see it live (age 10) and I got to Cape Kennedy with my kids and wife in 2007 (age47) -wonderful stuff!!!

  • brilliant stuff......go tranquility!!
