Make Fluorescein

In this video we synthesize Fluorescein. The procedure is very simple...

Mix 0.1 gram each of phthalic anhydride and resorcinol (I bought both at chemkitdepot.com) in a test tube and add 4-5 drops conc. sulfuric acid. Heat gently for 2 minutes. Allow to cool, add 5cc water, and make basic with sodium hydroxide. Mix well and filter off any solids. Store in an air tight bottle.

Very nice! I like the way it looks as it's dripping down through the water. It has a bit of a psychedelic quality to it.
