In Portland, seeing young adults like Carol Ann is rather normal. On the outside many look happy, and the old hippie in me wants to believe they are happy. But the realist in me knows that most of our countries homeless youth are throwaways. 40 percent of homeless youth are never even reported missing.

I am glad they found a strong community. Part of me wants to believe the fairytale life these kids present. I just can feel the pain behind the smiles, and I know most of these kids don't live in the "woods" by choice.

I have said this a few times. I wish someone would do research to find out how many street kids end up as chronic homeless in their adult lives.

Please, when you see kids like Carol Ann on the street, don't try and change them. Best thing to do is be a friend and listen. Years of pain and abuse don't go away quickly. Many have serious trust issues, and all of them can use more love.

  • How does the "wealthiest" nation on earth have such a large homeless population?

Like George Carlin said: "It's called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.

  • @TheBoxingCannabyte This is true.

  • @breebw, great point. But I'd say that in turn we shouldn't blame her for her views as it must be hard to identify with "regular folk" at this point. Perception is a double-edged sword.

  • @TheAmericanMirror, George Carlin is the closest we've ever had to having a supreme being. I love how he'd tear me a new asshole for even suggesting it, too. (I'm a punk-rocking atheist so it's all good, anyway :P)

  • moronic girl

  • what a cool, pretty girl... such a shame that minds like hers live in the woods or on the streets

  • 1:18 she says "people don't even acknowledge your existence". It is ironic, for she judges others that may actually not be so far from her situation.

The tipping point from homelessness can be a fine line, and some cling to the other side precariously. They appear cold, uncaring.

But in reality, it is all they can do from falling into the abyss.

  • Hey this is Reggie guys! I bet you in Florida about now!

  • @madtownband So what? Marijuana is a beautiful substance. Its probably not what you think.... its a life saver... literally. Its spiritual too.

  • This is the life I want to live. Travel, travel, travel and I wish more people wanted this lifestyle. Its a trip man.
