Warming up before intense exercise is vitally important... and stretching doesn't qualify as an approved form of warm-up.

Exercise your options with a bike, treadmill, stairclimber, cross-training, ski machine, rowing machine, or just going for a walk or climbing the stairs. Five minutes of whole-body rhythmic activity before strenuous exercise goes a long way to prevent strains and sprains.
