this is a video of me modeling a robot when i was 13 it looks a bit cartoony but at the end i changed it with wiers etc... anyway i saw it on my computer and thought why not upload it... send feedback...

when you have selected what you want to extend you press 'E' for extrude and then click on how you want to extrude it... test it out
