When I recorded this video, in September 2010, the Flat Sequencing Sorter was still relatively new for the United States Postal Service. So, what you see in this video are newly installed (and being installed) units that are still in the test phase and not processing mail. The main idea for these particular machines is to process and sequence "flats" - magazines and similarly sized envelopes that are not normally sequenced by other equipment. The Flat Sequencing Sorters, I'm told, cost nearly $10 million each - but that cost probably includes all the infrastructure and other support that needed to be upgraded to accommodate these massive machines.

boooo! fss sucks! it breaks down at least 2 days a week, and even when it works, i still have a ton of mail to case. 2 bundles of flats to hold, they're crazy.
