DriftWood played and composed by me, Samantha Muir.

Some years ago I lived on Magnetic Island, North Queensland, Australia. My favourite bay was Arthur Bay. A small, sandy bay with crystal waters and a coral reef. There was also a huge piece of driftwood which had been washed up on the sand many years before. The piece of driftwood was a feature of the bay. One day a cyclone approached Magnetic Island (Maggie Island to the locals).... this often happens during the cyclone season. There was torrential rain, gale force winds and very high tides.... The cyclone was heading straight for the island but then veered away and swept down the coast. Everyone was very relieved.... The sun came out...... Things returned to normal..... One afternoon I decied to go swimming at Arthur Bay. When I got there my piece of driftwood had vanished! Swept away with the cyclone. I often wonder where it went. What journey it undertook and what beach it found to rest upon once again....? I think the human soul is much like a piece of driftwood, journeying through life, finding tranquil shores, encountering storms, moving on through the great ocean of time, disappearing for a while and then returning to new and different shores..... Well, something like that :-D

I hope you like our video. My music, and Josie's wonderful photos. Thanks Josie!
Oh, BTW, the opening photo is an old photo of mine of Arthur Bay which shows the piece of driftwood. Joise restored it so I could use it. Only the opening photo is of Magnetic Island..... We need to go there to take some more pics!

  • Beautiful title and piece. And yes, life seems to be like that.

  • great video! great music! I wish I can write Better English !

  • I've listened to this after John Williams' work, they could be two movements in one piece. You can be proud of your composition, it is beautiful and with the story behind I can imagine myself being that driftwood travelling with your music across the seas. Thanks for the trip,

    Gergely

  • I Live 20 Mins from Maggie! In Townsville.

  • Sam, I am such an eager commenter, that I commented b4 reading your description about why you wrote this song; it is poetic and reflective, the story behind it, and it deepens my appreciation behind your beautiful song.

  • Dreamy; lovely!

  • A beautiful piece to listen to in the still of the night, Sam, and to follow your story and your thoughts to the accompaniment of the enchanting photos has been a real delight!

    Take care, Maria
